Practical answers to the questions Mackay drivers ask us most often. Read up before booking, or call if you'd rather just chat through it.
Most windscreen damage in the Mackay region comes from stones flicked up by other vehicles, especially on highway stretches and unsealed roads out toward the mines.
Less obvious culprits include sudden temperature changes (jumping in a hot car and blasting the aircon cold), pre-existing chips that spread overnight, body flex from rough roads, and poor-quality glass that fails under normal stress.
Replacement is recommended whenever damage compromises structural integrity, visibility, or safety. Modern windscreens are a load-bearing safety component, not just a window.
The general rule: chips larger than a 20-cent coin, any crack longer than 75mm, damage in the driver's direct line of sight, or anything that has reached the edge of the glass usually needs full replacement rather than repair.
In tropical North Queensland, tinting is closer to essential than optional. Quality films block up to 99% of UV radiation and reject up to 70% of solar heat before it ever enters the cabin.
That translates to a cooler car, less load on your aircon and fuel consumption, reduced fading of seats and dash, lower glare on bright days, and added privacy and shatter resistance.
Queensland Transport sets clear Visible Light Transmission (VLT) limits for road-legal vehicles. The windscreen must remain untinted (a narrow visor strip above the wipers is permitted), while front side windows must allow at least 35% VLT.
Behind the B-pillar, rear side and rear screens can be tinted down to 20% VLT for passenger vehicles. All our tinting is installed to be fully QLD-compliant unless the vehicle is off-road only.
Most vehicles built after 2018 use forward-facing cameras and sensors mounted to the windscreen to power Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — lane-keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise, and collision warning.
When the windscreen is replaced, those cameras shift by even a fraction of a millimetre. Without recalibration, the systems can misread the road ahead. We calibrate to manufacturer specifications and issue a certificate.
If you have comprehensive cover, your windscreen is almost always covered — often with no excess for chip repairs. The process is much simpler than most people expect, and we handle the paperwork end-to-end.
Tell us your insurer, policy number, and what's happened. We'll lodge the claim, organise authority to proceed, and book your service. You pay the policy excess (if any) directly to us; we invoice the insurer for the rest.
Our mobile units carry everything needed to repair or replace a windscreen at your home, workplace, or roadside across Mackay and surrounds. No need to lose half a day driving to a workshop.
We confirm your booking time, arrive in a clearly marked vehicle, complete the work on-site, and walk you through aftercare before we leave. Replacements need around 60–90 minutes plus adhesive cure time.
